Experience what it was like to go to a one-room school house 100 years ago with all grades in one room with only one teacher. See the old “ink well” desks. Find out what the children did at recess with no slides or other modern playground equipment. The students brought their lunch in buckets or cloth napkins. They often brought leftovers from last night’s dinner, or bread smeared with lard.

This is a great time to evaluate the educational obstacles that were placed before our ancestors involving finding a balance between work and school. During this time period children were not required to go to school and were often forced to stay home and help on the farm. Therefore, for many children getting a proper education could prove quite difficult.
